Matthew Foster works from both direct observation and memory. His interest in painting from memory has developed into a method of choosing subjects and environments that he has a long standing history with, and then working up compositions from his own experiences, creating a personal allegory within the picture. He has worked as an artist for over fifteen years, creating drawings as small as 4 inches square to paintings 5 feet square, working primarily in oils and charcoal.
Foster is very interested in the figure and its relation to posture and its environment, or in the case of his "work" series, its container.
